The Hand that Feeds

Two plinths stand a metre apart; on the smaller plinth, a handgun with a looping video of children testing weapons; on the larger plinth a small practice target and a blank screen. Audiences are tempted by the setup to test the handgun. However, aligning the barrel of the gun with the practice target causes the blank screen to switch on, showing a live feed of the firer. The work references large scale military ‘open days’ in Singapore, where families are invited to test the army’s latest weapons; the work confronts an act of shooting with an image of the shooter.
